Storylines: Right, but Not Right

Anglers have come to know Kentucky Lake as a ledge-fishing paradise. A place where fish flock offshore come summer, forming mega schools by the hundreds that can't resist jigs, big worms, crankbaits or flutter spoons. Well, the ledges are still there, the fish sure are on them, and the same-old lures are working. Only problem is the schools are acting funny. The giant schools won't bite, the little schools are suspended and any school seems liable to disappear at a moment's notice.

Knight Leads on Kentucky Lake

Reigning Forrest Wood Cup champion Brad Knight of Lancing, Tenn., caught the day's big bass (a whopping 8-pound, 9-ounce largemouth) and weighed 23 pounds, 6 ounces total. That was enough to grab a narrow lead on day one of the Walmart FLW Tour presented by Mercury and hosted by the Kentucky Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau. Knight leads by just three ounces over Shinichi Fukae, who was the only other pro to break 23 pounds.

Day one of the Walmart FLW Tour on Kentucky Lake presented by Mercury and hosted by the Kentucky Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau has dawned with nearly perfect conditions. Light winds and warming temps should make the ledges easy to fish and cause plenty of fresh bass to move out toward their summertime haunts.

With his 14th-place finish at Pickwick Lake, Keystone Light pro Jeff Sprague is the new AOY leader, and he's on pace for the top-20 sweep. Sprague also has finishes of 15th at Lake Okeechobee, 13th at Lake Hartwell and third at Beaver Lake.

Gross All The Way

Despite a brutally tough final day, Buddy Gross of Ringgold, Ga., held on for the win in the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Quaker State and hosted by Florence/Lauderdale Tourism on Pickwick Lake. On day four, Gross only brought two bass to the scale worth 4 pounds, 14 ounces, but his total of 74-5 was enough to overcome Michael Neal's late flurry for his first Tour win and a $100,000 payday.

For the third day in row, Walmart FLW Tour rookie Buddy Gross of Ringgold, Ga., walloped a 20-pound plus limit on Pickwick Lake and in the process pretty much walloped the rest of the field.
